Amenities offered at Bay Club

This luxury fitness "chain" in the Bay Area is what most folks would refer to as a country club. We only call it a "chain" because of their multiple gyms (22) scattered throughout California. They're definitely upscale too, with:

  • An average of nearly 150k square foot sized locations
  • Four golf courses available in Danville, San Jose, Novato and Rancho Santa Few California
  • 73% (16 locations) with a pool—several locations with multiple
  • 59% (13 locations) offering childcare
  • 55% (12 locations) with basketball

And there are of course, many—and we mean many more amenities we haven't even listed.

Here's what we love about Bay Club

We are quite impressed by the extensive range of amenities offered at their premium locations. It truly provides an ultimate fitness experience that has everything you could possibly desire, especially if budget isn’t a concern.

  • We appreciate the luxurious atmosphere and top-tier offerings of Bay Club, which provide an unparalleled resort and country-club experience.

  • Explore a wide variety of racquet sports, featuring tennis, pickleball, and racquetball. Be sure to check out their classes and tournaments as well!

  • With a variety of pools, water-based activities, saunas, steam rooms, and spa facilities, Bay Club is an ideal choice for those seeking rejuvenation, relaxation, and anything water-related.

Here are the things we wish Bay Club would improve

Although Bay Club boasts an impressive array of amenities, there are still a few enhancements we’d love to see from this premium fitness facility.

  • The pricing options for memberships were straightforward, beginning with a basic membership rate listed on their website. Although you can customize and calculate your membership online, this feature is somewhat hidden and requires several clicks to access on their site.

  • Building on our earlier pricing discussion, we'd like to emphasize that we find their plans to be somewhat pricey. For instance, a basic membership for an individual in the Bay Area costs $430 per month, along with a one-time initiation fee of $250.

  • They have grown beyond their California base. While it may not be part of their current strategy, we believe that Bay Club could thrive with further expansion.

How much does it cost to join Bay Club?

Bay Club is a premium fitness club that resembles a luxurious country or golf club, rather than your average gym. If you're willing to invest a few hundred dollars each month, you'll enjoy a wealth of amenities that justify the cost. In the San Francisco Bay Area, a standard adult membership typically falls between $430 and $575 per month. If you're looking to add a child under 12, expect an additional fee of around $400, while a teen membership will set you back about $450. Keep in mind the one-time initiation fee, which can range from $500 to over $2500.

So, what makes these memberships pricier than usual? You'll benefit from exclusive access to activities such as tennis, squash, and golf, along with complimentary childcare services. The priciest membership option is the Club West Gold, granting you complete access to all Bay Club locations and complimentary childcare wherever available. As of November 2023, this membership costs $405 per month plus a $2500 initiation fee.

  • There is no indication of an annual fee on their website or during the membership checkout process.
  • The typical one-time initiation fee is approximately $500. However, when we explored options in the San Francisco Bay Area, we encountered a staggering initiation fee of $2500.

Final thoughts โ€” Is worth it?

The Bay Club stands out as an exceptional gym and country club. It's important not to pigeonhole this facility strictly based on its fitness offerings. At the same time, it's equally crucial to recognize that its diverse range of services elevates it beyond the typical gym experience, making direct comparisons to more conventional gyms on our site challenging. Pricing can sometimes reach up to 30 times that of the most affordable membership option ($9.99 per month), indicating the need for a different evaluation approach. Even the initiation fees can vary significantly, ranging from $250 to $2500—much higher than those at other gyms. Nonetheless, many members find real value in the Bay Club, particularly if they:

  • Have a passion for golf, tennis, or racquetball
  • Want their children to engage in classes, training, and tournaments
  • Feel that a gym experience encompasses more than just weightlifting and cardio machines; it’s about connecting with like-minded individuals

These three considerations can help prospective members decide whether the Bay Club is the right fit, as they highlight the key differences from traditional gyms.
