Here's what we love about City Sports Club

This well-rounded, mid-range gym chain is a favorite among swimmers and basketball enthusiasts alike. We admire their commitment to team sports, as they regularly hold tournaments and games on their polished hardwood courts.

  • In the San Francisco Bay Area, basketball players have limited choices for hardwood courts, primarily found in high schools and colleges. City Sports offers an excellent alternative for those looking to practice their shooting skills.

  • Childcare services are available at 17 out of the 20 City Sports locations, providing a valuable resource for parents in the Bay Area.

  • Out of 20 City Sports Clubs, 17 boast indoor swimming pools, all of which are heated for your comfort!

Here are the things we wish City Sports Club would improve

Although City Sports meets the needs of many, there are still a few areas where we'd like to see improvements.

  • Modern and updated gyms are essential for attracting members. As a subsidiary of LA Fitness and Esporta, the City Sports brand faces competition for resources, including renovations, enhancements, and facility improvements.

  • Over 4 out of their 20 locations featured turf, which is a sought-after amenity for activities like stretching, full-body workouts, kettlebell exercises, and various other fitness routines.

  • The descriptions of amenities on the website were more transparent. While Olympic lifting platforms aren't mentioned as available at any of their gym locations, we've observed them featured in videos and social media posts. Regrettably, we had to mark them as nonexistent at all 20 locations.

How much does it cost to join City Sports Club?

City Sports Club offers straightforward and consistent pricing across all 20 of its locations in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento. Here’s a breakdown of the membership options:

  • $39.99 per month with full club access and a $75 initiation fee
  • $49.99 per month for full club access and no initiation fee

Additionally, an annual fee of $59 is charged 14 days after sign-up and then annually thereafter. Both membership types grant you access to a comprehensive selection of fitness equipment, including strength training tools, free weights, and plate-loaded benches, alongside cardio machines like ellipticals, StairMasters, and treadmills. There are no variations in membership levels, so amenities such as racquetball/squash courts, swimming pools, and hot tubs are available to all members, as well as access to cycle and group fitness classes. Plus, the "multi-club" membership extends your access to Esporta and LA Fitness facilities, giving you the option to work out at over 600 gyms in total.

  • The yearly membership fee is $59, which will be charged two weeks after your initial signup. After that, you can anticipate this same fee to be billed annually.
  • City Sports offers an initiation fee of either $75 or $0. If you go with the higher fee, your monthly payments will be reduced to $39.99 instead of $49.99. The point at which both options balance out is after 8 months, meaning that if you remain a member beyond that period, the $75 initial payment becomes the more cost-effective choice.

Additional info about

Final thoughts โ€” Is worth it?

City Sports Clubs represent the larger "big box" gym category, featuring expansive facilities that boast a wide range of amenities. With generous space, they offer services that smaller gyms often lack, such as swimming pools, saunas, and basketball courts. We appreciate the lofty ceilings and the near-luxurious atmosphere of these gyms, which creates an energizing vibe as we prepare for our workouts. However, this experience comes at a premium, with membership fees ranging from $40 to $60 per month. While other budget-friendly chains may have lower rates, they generally provide fewer amenities. Therefore, it’s essential to consider whether extras like childcare or access to a hot tub play a significant role in your fitness journey. If they do, City Sports Clubs should definitely be on your list of options.
