Welcome to your definitive guide about Retro Fitness! We put together our wealth of knowledge right here, making sure you have a comprehensive understanding of this popular gym chain.
Retro Fitness calls themselves "a hometown gym dedicated to building a strong community." We see them as a solid, value oriented franchise gym chain with a good, but not gigantic mix of amenities.
Clubs do include the standard package of gym equipment—decked out in bright yellows and reds. Eye-catching, to say the least! You can expect to workout with:
Many Retro Fitness locations also include amenities that we don't see too often:
Things you won't find at Retro Fitness gyms include pools, saunas, steam rooms or basketball courts. Same goes for hot tubs and towel service. Like we said: a value oriented gym chain—that covers all the basics.
While the exact times will differ for every location, the most common opening hours we've seen from Retro Fitness are:

Retro has launched four fitness clubs in Texas as part of their Project LIFT initiative, aiming to establish 500 health clubs in 50 black and brown communities over the next five years. Currently, 30 additional locations are in the works in Texas, following their affordable high-value model.
Introducing a highly detailed and personalized fitness app. It offers not just at-home and efficient workouts, but also valuable resources on mental well-being and nutrition from the Retro Fitness Kitchen.
While Retro Fitness meets many of the needs of its members, there are a few enhancements we hope to see implemented.
Childcare services including babysitting, daycare, and childcare were previously available at our clubs. However, starting November 30th, 2023, this amenity has been discontinued at all locations. Some clubs have repurposed the space for red light therapy or created additional areas for stretching exercises. Please note that my training data is current only until October 2023.
We often dream of having saunas at our Retro Fitness locations. Unfortunately, not a single gym in our network offers this feature, even though many of our competitors do. This amenity is frequently requested by our members.
Prices tend to be similar to those of budget gym memberships, ranging from $9.99 to $19.99 per month. However, many facilities we come across begin at $24.99, which often reflects a promotional rate from larger, well-known gym brands that typically provide a wider array of amenities.
Retro Fitness offers mid-range memberships, with monthly fees ranging from $19.99 to $39.99. We surveyed five different locations and found a consistent membership format, making it easy for you to evaluate your options. Let's break down what you can choose from:
Additional costs include an annual fee that ranges from $49 to $69, charged 45 days after enrollment, and a $49 enrollment fee, which is currently waived during the December 2023 promotion.
When looking specifically at the Flex membership prices, they vary significantly by location:
With such a wide range in pricing depending on the market, it's important to compare nearby gyms if you’re considering this chain. Remember, my knowledge is based on data available until October 2023.

Retro Fitness gyms combine a daring aesthetic with a nostalgic vibe, showcasing a retro design and name. They offer three different membership tiers, with varying amenities as you increase your monthly payment. Like with most gym franchises, the entry-level membership provides all the basic workout essentials, including a range of strength free weights, machines, and various cardio options like StairMasters, ellipticals, and treadmills. Priced at $19.99, this entry-level plan is a solid deal. However, it's worth noting that some locations charge $24.99 and $39.99, which can be considered a bit steep compared to other gyms.
Moving up to the mid-tier membership—Core—you'll find prices at $26.99 and $49.99, but the upgrades are limited to access across all locations; there aren’t notable enhancements, as this price range usually includes perks like a pool or sauna at other gyms. Additionally, childcare services are not offered by any Retro locations, which could be a shortcoming for many potential members.
The top-tier membership—Ultimate—allows you to bring a guest anytime and grants access to group exercise classes. However, pricing ranges from $39.99 to $59.99, and beyond this guest privilege, the extras seem minimal. If you’re passionate about your favorite fitness class or trainer, the higher cost might feel justified. Nonetheless, for many individuals, similar spending with competitors can provide access to premium features, like tennis, pickleball, HIIT sessions, or small group training. Given this, we hesitate to endorse the Ultimate membership to a wide audience.
