Here's what we love about NYSC

A dynamic and comprehensive gym brand originating from New York, this bold chain has made its mark throughout the Northeastern region. With a wide range of amenities, many locations offer access to pools, saunas, and steam rooms.

  • Manhattanites have a wealth of options when it comes to fitness, with NYSC offering more than 10 locations across the area. Whether you're in Downtown, Midtown, or Uptown, there's a club nearby to meet your workout needs.

  • Attention swimmers! The indoor pool at E 45th Street is now open for your enjoyment. Dive in and enjoy a revitalizing workout as you swim some laps.

  • Playing pickup basketball indoors is always a great time! There are 6 locations from the chain where you can enjoy shooting some hoops.

Here are the things we wish NYSC would improve

While New York Sports Clubs seems to meet the majority of their members' needs, there are still a handful of enhancements we would appreciate.

  • In the city that’s always bustling, this gym chain regrettably doesn't match the energy, as it lacks any locations that operate 24 hours a day.

  • Childcare services are offered at only three of their gyms, while babysitting options are available at a greater number of their clubs.

  • Squash wasn't limited to just three gyms. Interestingly, NYSC began its journey 50 years ago in 1973 as a modest network of squash clubs!

How much does it cost to join NYSC?

NYSC provides two distinct membership options, priced between $34.99 and $89.99 per month. We evaluated four clubs located throughout the country:

  • For $34.99 to $49.99, you can access a single club with unlimited group fitness classes, along with a full range of free weights, strength machines, and cardio equipment.
  • For $79.99 to $89.99, you gain all-club access, which includes everything mentioned earlier, plus the ability to work out at facilities in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington DC, Pennsylvania, and Florida.

Additionally, there is a $29 enrollment fee collected during the checkout process, as well as a $69 annual fee, which will be deducted about 15 days post-enrollment and will recur each year. The W125th Street location in NYC is currently offering a December 2023 promotion that waives the first month's dues, giving you a savings of $49.99 right from the start. Keep in mind that some locations, like W 16th Street and 23rd Park in New York City, do not offer single club access—your only option there is the $89.99 all-club pass.

Please note that this information is accurate as of October 2023.

  • You'll be charged a $69 annual fee for your NYSC membership, which will be billed just 15 days after your registration begins.
  • There's a one-time initiation fee of $29, which is charged at the time of registration. This amount is relatively low compared to many other gym franchises.

Final thoughts โ€” Is worth it?

During the pandemic, New York Sports Clubs (NYSC) underwent a significant transformation. They dropped the names "Philadelphia Sports Club" and "Boston Sports Club" and took the opportunity to rebrand, revitalize, and renovate their facilities. What does this mean for you? A more cohesive gym experience with pricing and amenities tailored to their members' needs.

NYSC has established a bold and dynamic identity, evident in their online presence and social media, resonating with the fast-paced New York City lifestyle. This evolution includes innovative features such as "functional turf" and a "performance lab," along with convenient "grab and go coolers" stocked for your next adventure.

You can expect a well-rounded workout experience with plenty of options like free weights, strength machines, kettlebells, and more. The addition of turf allows for bodyweight exercises and stretching, providing the essentials for a solid workout—an appealing setup for many New Yorkers who might even relax in the available saunas afterward.

However, the range of amenities is somewhat limited. For instance, only 99 locations have a swimming pool or basketball courts. And while there may be childcare options, they're not available at every club. Therefore, it's essential to be selective when choosing an NYSC location, ensuring it meets your specific needs.

When it comes to pricing, NYSC is straightforward with just two membership levels. Based on our research from five different clubs, their rates range from $34.99 to $49.99 for the basic membership options.
