So, which gyms have saunas?

Larger nationwide gym chains such as LA Fitness and 24 Hour Fitness have them, accounting for over 600 gyms with saunas in the country. These mid-tier gyms are physically bigger in size, and offer saunas alongside their other aqua amenities such as pools and steam rooms.

Higher end, boutique style locations like Equinox and Life Time have saunas as well, but not nearly as widespread. This amenity is available on a location-by-location basis though.

You won't find the inexpensive gym chains like Anytime Fitness and Planet Fitness to have saunas though. Generally, same goes for YouFit Gyms and Snap Fitness (though we're seeing some of their newest locations start to include infrared versions).

How about your HVLP (high-value-low-price) chains? That's your VASA Fitness, Chuze Fitness, EoS and Retro Fitness 2.0. With so many new gyms being built by these them (about ~100 in 2023, 2024, 2025 and beyond), saunas and their popularity have taken off. We count around ~250 between these 4 gym operators.

What you need to know about saunas at gyms

Saunas are compact, enclosed spaces heated to high temperatures using dry heat. Many gym-goers use them to unwind and relax post-workout or to warm up their muscles before exercising. Here are a few key points to keep in mind before using a sauna:

  • Take the heat: Sauna temperatures generally range from 160 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s essential to ease into it and let your body adjust to the warmth gradually.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water both before and after your sauna session. The heat causes significant sweating, leading to fluid loss that needs to be replenished.
  • You're gonna sweat! The intense heat promotes sweating, which helps flush out toxins and improve blood circulation throughout your body. It's always a good idea to bring a towel along!
  • Skip the extras: Store your phone in a locker, and if you must bring it, avoid using it inside. High temperatures can damage electronics, and many phones, like iPhones, may display an overheating warning. Many signs outside gym saunas also say no shoes, weights, loud music, and certainly not food.

These gym chains don't offer saunas as an amenity.

How come these gyms don't have saunas?

There are several reasons, with cost being a major factor. Saunas require ongoing maintenance and management, which adds to the gym’s operational expenses. Including this as an amenity would increase monthly membership prices.Another issue is space. Physically smaller, chains like Anytime Fitness or Snap Fitness tend to prioritize equipment like treadmills and weight machines, using every available inch of their facilities for these core features.

You should hit the sauna more often! Check out the benefits:

  • Relieve stress and tension: After a tough workout, the heat and humidity in a sauna help relax tense muscles and release endorphins. This can elevate your mood while reducing stress levels. I use the sauna both before and after a workout: its an elating feeling.
  • Boost your cardiovascular health: Saunas can increase blood flow and can contribute to lowering blood pressure. Regular sauna use may also reduce inflammation and stimulate the release of nitric oxide, improving circulation by relaxing blood vessels. Some studies also suggest it can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
  • Enhance your skin’s health: The heat from saunas open up your pores, encouraging sweat to flush out toxins and impurities from your skin. With better blood flow, you should experience better hydration as well.
24 Hour Fitness
Nearly all of their 200+ gyms with saunas use the traditional heating style (stones/rocks to retain the heat).
Crunch Fitness
About a third of Crunch gyms have saunas, we count around ~100 total. Nearly all of their new construction / new builds have it.
LA Fitness
Remember that LA Fitness, Esporta and City Sports are part of one large company. That means between the three, over 500 of their gyms have a sauna.
VASA Fitness
Over 90% of VASA gyms offer the amenity. That's over 50 gyms concentrated in Colorado and Utah. Traditional heating elements are used here too.
